About Us

    The East Fairfield Coal Company was founded in 1934 and is the oldest active coal company operating in Northeastern Ohio or Western Pennsylvania.  It has operated continuously since that time in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties in Ohio.  The company and its affiliated companies, Commercial Minerals, Inc., Sterling Mining Corporation, and Mahoning Energy, has grown over the years adding clay and aggregates to its foundation coal business.
    
    The East Fairfield Coal Co. operates two underground coal mines that supply product to various industrial customers in a four-state area.  A strip operation provides clay to various manufacturers of brick in a two-state area.  A limestone quarry and underground mine provides Pennsylvania and Ohio state approved aggregates.  With the operation of these deep mines, The East Fairfield Coal Co. operates three of the eleven active underground mines in Ohio.  In addition, the limestone mine is the only active underground limestone mine in the state of Ohio.
